The following index has been created by taking the names as listed on the enumerator sheets for the 1901 census which are on microfilm in the National Archives. Unfortunately, some small portions of the Laois 1901 census returns have not been filmed, and there are errors on the enumerator sheets. Surnames were sometimes spelled differently by the enumerator than by the head of household. For the most part this index shows the surnames as spelled by the enumerator.

The population of County Laois in 1901 was 57,417 people of whom 29,694 were male and 27,723 female. This index contains the names of 12,118 Heads of Household for the county. This is the only name index that exists for the county Laois 1901 census returns.
